  • Storytelling in marketing has two components:
    1. Intimacy:
      - Is about sharing and being a witness to what you've done (things that may or may not have worked) so that other people can get a glimpse inside
      - Is not about you teaching them something
    2. Problem and solution:
      - Is about an identifiable problem that whatever it is you do is solving for your audience
      - Taking the message off of you and onto a problem that you solve for your customers
  • How to leverage storytelling in your small business marketing in 4 simple steps:
    • Step 1: Identify the characters in your story
      - The hero: Your customer
      - The villain: The problem
      - The guide / mentor: Your small business / you
    • Step 2: Problem
      - Understand your audiences problem, pain points and common day to day struggles

      Answer the questions:
      - How can I help my customer with my wisdom?
      - Which resources or tools do I give them that help them win and be a hero?
    • Step 3: Agitation
      - Show the audience that you understand what really matters to them
      - Make the problem seem scarier and strike and emotional chord
    • Step 4: Solution
      - Show your audience that they need a solution like yours if they want to solve their problem
  • Make sure the images you use tell your story as well and carefully pick brand images and brand photography
  • Make a story board
  • Work out a unique value proposition (UVP)
  • Make an outline of the story you want to tell in your video, blog post, sales page, social media post, etc and follow that storyline to be sure you hit all the point you wan to hit
